Mock Round 2 Picks 38-72

38 Detroit Tigers - Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State

Sleeper Cole Wilcox, RHP, Georgia

Wilcox is tempting here, but he is rumored to have a large demand, one that a team like Baltimore might be better suited to meet. Instead, things set up perfect for the tigers to add an athletic backstop who is the top player on my Big Board.

39 Baltimore Orioles - Cole Wilcox, RHP, Georgia

Sleeper Tanner Witt, RHP/3B, Episcopal HS (TX) Committed Texas

Witt is another big bonus player, but Wilcox’s ceiling is as high as ay player left on the board. The Orioles should have a ton of pool money left. They should be taking top talents in virtually every round.

40 Miami Marlins - JT Ginn, RHP, Mississippi State

Sleeper Casey Martin, SS, Arkansas

Martin was the top-rated Arkansas bat at points in the draft season. Still, if the Marlins like Meyer, then it is easy to think they would like Ginn. He has a similar build and excellent stuff. If he had been healthy, then he would be long gone.

41 Kansas City Royals - Tommy Mace, RHP, Florida

Sleeper Cole Henry, RHP, LSU

I know they grabbed one arm but could look to grab another one in a deep draft. Both henry and Mace have the frame they look for. Mace gets the advantage as an easier sign and coming from Florida, which they have mined before.

42 Toronto Blue Jays - Kyle Nicolas, RHP, Ball State

Sleeper Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech

I think they were all set to go arm, then the top draft fell into their laps. Here they get the arm, one from the MAC which they have mined and has bloodlines. Better shares some traits with Meyer, who they were linked to heavily before. They could also look for savings here as Martin won’t be cheap.

43 Seattle Mariners - Casey Martin, SS/2B, Arkansas

Sleeper Daniel Cabrera, OF, LSU

Last year they took nine pitchers with there top 11 selections and then took another one to lead off this draft. I am assuming at some point they have to take a bat. Martin has loud tools and some late first-round hype. He would be a risky college player with whose ceiling and floor are more like a prep player. Cabrera is the safer talent but seems more a fourth outfielder long term.

44 Pittsburgh Pirates - Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio HS (TX), Committed Texas

Sleeper Tanner Witt, RHP/3B, Episcopal HS (TX) Committed Texas

After a pair of safer college players, the Pirates would seem primed to go prep here. I think Kelley is the easier sign and would be a natural fit for the Pirates art this selection. Witt might cost more but could also be in play.

45 San Diego Padres - Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech

Sleeper: Landon Knack, RHP, East Tennesse State

They took a pair of high priced prep talents, so they might look to knack to save money. Both these arms are quick movers who could help in a bullpen sooner rather than later. Beeter has some of the best present stuff in this class.

46 Colorado Rockies - Landon Knack, RHP, East Tennesse State

Sleeper Mason Erla, RHP, Michigan State

On paper, I think the Rockies had the most expensive first round. I see them looking to save money here to help pay Romo, who I thought for sure was headed to LSU. Knack and Erla are two of the better-rated players who are senior-aged and hence have the least leverage. It is a money game for the Rockies with this pick.

47 Chicago White Sox - Tanner Witt, RHP/3B, Episcopal HS (TX) Committed Texas

Sleeper Dax Fulton, LHP, Mustang HS (OK) Committed Oklahoma

I am operating under the assumption here that Garrett Crochet does not take the full slot and leaves them with the wiggle room to go over slot. Witt and Fulton are the top two prep arms left on most boards, and the White Sox went prep pitchers in round two and three a year ago.

48 Cincinnati Reds - Chris McMahon, RHP, Miami

Sleeper CJ Van Eyk, RHP, FSU

The Reds might just run this one up. After looking at the college pitching with the 12th pick, they find a borderline first-round talent here in McMahon, who was one of the top pitchers in the country at the start of the year. Van Eyk might be the most talented college arm and could be a player the Reds might think they can coach up.

49 San Francisco Giants - Anthony Servideo, SS, Ole Miss

Sleeper Daniel Cabrera, OF, LSU

After all the prep talk, the Giants took the safest player on the board in round one. This pick has them debating between a pair of college bats. Servideo had a good Cape and was one of the more productive players in the country to start the year. He might have been having the best season of anyone not named Nick Gonzales. He plays in the SEC with a history of high walk rates, don’t sleeper on Servideo, who could go even higher.

50 Texas Rangers - Daniel Cabrera, OF, LSU

Sleeper Logan Allen, LHP, FIU

The Rangers went with a safe, highly productive player just like they did in 2019. If they continue that trend, then Daniel Cabrera stands out at this point in the draft as he even had some first-round talk. The pitching equivalent would be the athletic Allen, who has excelled as a two way player in college.

51 Chicago Cubs - Gage Workman, IF, Arizona State

Sleeper Daniel Calabrese, OF, St Elizabeth HS (ON) Committed to Arkansas

The Cubs made a great pick int he first round with Ed Howard. It was also a very Athletics type of pick driven by the new Scouting director. Gage Workman’s power ability up the middle and overall youth also fit the mold. If they went prep, the hyper-athletic Calabrese would make sense.

52 New York Mets - Dax Fulton, LHP, Mustang HS (OK) Committed Oklahoma

Sleeper Cole Henry, RHP, LSU

The Mets draft looks a lot like last years at this point that would mean a prep arm here with a high ceiling before punting the majority of their next few picks to save money for the big signings. If they went the college route, then Henry would make sense.

53 Milwaukee Brewers - Joe Boyle, RHP, Notre Dame

Sleeper Blaze Jordan, 1B, DeSoto HS (MS), Committed Mississippi State

In round two, the Brewers have gone more with high ceiling and loud tools. Boyle is a risk but has all the tools to turn into a number three or better pitcher. He is one of the big risk/rewards in this draft. Jordan’s raw power also makes him one of the more interesting players at this point.

54 St. Louis Cardinals - Nick Swiney, LHP, NC State

Sleeper Logan Allen, LHP, FIU

A college arm makes a ton of sense here for the Cardinals in terms of the drafts depth and the Cardinals having a few more picks on the horizon. Swiney was a potential first-rounder who is just a strong value at this point. Allen is a similar talent.

55 Washington Nationals - CJ Van Eyk, RHP, FSU

Sleeper Jared Jones, RHP, La Mirada HS (CA) Committed Texas

The Nationals tend to look at sliding talent or players whose stock dipped late. There was a time where Van Eyk was viewed among the best arms in the class. He was inconsistent this fall, and the case can be made if he had just one start instead of four, he would have gone in round one. Jones would fit the Nationals profile if they went prep.

56 Cleveland Indians - Daniel Calabrese, OF, St Elizabeth HS (ON) Committed to Arkansas

Sleeper Blaze Jordan, 1B, DeSoto HS (MS), Committed Mississippi State

The Indians love up the middle talent with plus defense, and athleticism enter the reclassified Candian outfielder. He has some of the best speed in the class and is a future centerfielder and leadoff type with a strong approach. Basically, he is PCA-lite. The Indians should have saved money. They could possibly take a player like Jordan here or even in the third.

57 Tampa Bay Rays - Mason Erla, RHP, Michigan State

Sleeper Kenyon Yovan, 3B/RHP, Oregon

The Rays like green jerseys. I am kidding, Bitsko is not coming cheap they need to save some cash. Erla and Yovan are intriguing players with tools that could be steals down the road or could wash out quickly. Yovan is a two-way player, and Erla saw his stuff jump this year both players are 22 with enough to still make them interesting players that could help the Rays to sign Bitsko.

58 Oakland A’s - Luke Waddell, 2B, Georgia Tech

Sleeper Kenyon Yovan, 3B/RHP, Oregon

We already know that Soderstrom is going to cost a lot over slot. So Yovan stays on as an intriguing talent. Look at his first two years at Oregon. He was an excellent reliever. Then go look at how he dominated in the early going this year. Even saying that Waddell is a junior who is senior-aged who fits the Oakland model as a speedster who plays up the middle. He has been highly productive in the ACC, but his lack of size and age could cause him to be an under slot signing for the Athletics here.

59 Minnesota Twins - Logan Allen, LHP, FIU

Sleeper Joey Wiemer, OF, Cincinnati

The Twins are a college heavy time who look for power first, second, and third. They did take a successful undersized pitcher with low walk rates in round two last year. They were connected to many college arms in round one, so maybe they go with the arm over the bat.

60 Los Angeles Dodgers - Seth Lonsway, LHP, Ohio State

Sleeper Burl Carraway, LHP, Dallas Baptist

For all the reasons Bobby Miller made a ton of sense to the Dodgers, so does Lonsway. The lefty has excellent spring and movement on his pitches. He struggles with his command, but if the Dodgers can work their magic, he could end up another pitcher who outperforms his draft position. Carraway is the top reliever, which might appeal to a Dodgers team that is all in for 2020.

Comp Round B

61 Miami Marlins - Jordan Nwogu, OF, Michigan

Sleeper Hudson Haskin, OF, Tulane

After projecting a pair of college pitchers, a bat seemed to make the most sense here. I went for the athleticism of Nwogu over the late-rising Haskin.

62 Detroit Tigers - Jared Jones, RHP, La Mirada HS (CA) Committed Texas

Sleeper Petey Halpin, OF, St. Francis HS (CA), Committed Texas

The Tigers could go with an athletic outfielder. Jones, though, has a tie to new Tigers director of pitching development Dan Hubbs who recruited him to USC and whose firing caused him to change commitments.

63 St. Louis Cardinals - Carson Montgomery, RHP, West Orange HS (FL) Committed FSU

Sleeper Alex Santos, RHP, Mount St. Michael HS (NY), Committed Maryland

Feels like the right spot for a prep arm, Montgomery is an exceptional value here, whereas Santos might be the easier sign.

64 Seattle Mariners - Cole Henry, RHP, LSU

Sleeper Zach DeLoach, OF, TAMU

At first, I had Henry off the board but realized first Seattle has been very too college heavy, and second, they would have the money to consider him here. Ok, so I knew they were college heavy, but still. He had some first-round run at points. DeLoach turned a great Cape into a great season, just did not get enough time to show.

65 Cincinnati Reds - Masyn Winn, RHP/SS, Kingwood HS (TX) Committed Arkansas

Sleeper Burl Carraway, LHP, Dallas Baptist

I think the fantastic coaching staff they have put together will find a way to use Winn’s considerable skills. They might even go to bat for the chance to work with him. As for Carraway, he could help a team this year, and the Reds are another pot committed squad. It worked so well last time they grabbed a help now pitcher in Mike Leake, just forget about Ryan Wagner.

66 Los Angeles Dodgers - Burl Carraway, LHP, Dallas Baptist

Sleeper Zavier Warren, ?, CMU

At this point, Carraway is just an excellent value as clearly the top reliever in this class. He is ranked in the top 50 on a lot of boards. As for Warren, he can play almost anywhere and has, feels like the type of guy the Dodgers would figure out how to use well.

Comp Picks

67 San Francisco Giants - Zach McCambley, RHP, Coastal Carolina

Sleeper Zach DeLoach, OF, TAMU

Giants get a pitcher here, taking McCambley, a high spin rate pitcher with a fastball and curve combo that should make him no worse than a reliever down the road. Deloach’s name will come up for any team considering a college bat at this range.

68 San Francisco Giants - Petey Halpin, OF, St. Francis HS (CA), Committed Texas

Sleeper Zach DeLoach, OF, TAMU

If he was a sleeper with the last pick, why not here as well. Got to think the Giants would take a prep bat in the first four picks. I say prep bat as they have drafted and signed one prep pitcher the last two years. They get a California kid, after being linked to a California outfielder and catcher leading up to the draft.

69 New York Mets - Alex Santos, RHP, Mount St. Michael HS (NY), Committed Maryland

Sleeper Yohandy Morales, 3B, Braddock HS (TX) Committed Miami

I had Santos here in the previous second-round mock, and it still makes sense. I think he is signable, he fits the value range, and I think the Mets enjoy stealing the spotlight when they can. The bottom line is it would be a good pick with good publicity. Morales would be the guy if they want to go for power potential at this point.

70 St. Louis Cardinals - Kyle Hurt, RHP, USC

Sleeper Bryce Bonnin, RHP, Texas Tech

The picks I have for the cardinals won’t come cheap, so looking to save some cash. Hurt has been a known prospect back to high school but unfortunately lives up to his name. Along with the lack of development, in general, that has happened at USC, aged like a senior, he could be cheaper. Bonnin is a reliever all the way, but two plus pitches and very athletic could turn him into a bullpen weapon.

71 Washington Nationals - Nick Garcia, RHP, Chapman

Sleeper Ian Seymour, RHP, VA Tech

I know a third straight college starter here seems off, but Garcia is such an interesting prospect he would be hard to pass on. He has less experience pitching than most high school arms but is hitting 98 already. He was an infielder until his sophomore year and is an arm to mold. Seymour has had late run and could be another second round name to know.

72 Houston Astros - Kala’i Rosario, OF, Waiakwa HS (HI)

Sleeper Trent Palmer, RHP, Jacksonville

I think the Astros will look to save a little more here to spread it around with other picks. Rosario has a soft college commit, for a player with his potential. Few high school kids hit the ball harder, which makes me want to move him to the Twins, but it is late, so he stays here. Palmer is a player with a strong statistical profile who could make sense too.
