Mock 4.0

This mock was started pasted midnight my time and finished close to 2:30 AM. I hope you enjoy and don’t judge my exhausted writing too harshly. One more mock will come out before the draft in list format.

1 Detroit Tigers - Spencer Torkelson, 1B, Arizona State
Sleeper Asa Lacy, LHP, TAMU

This one is practically signed, sealed, and delivered. Putting the sleeper for consistency more than anything else.

2 Baltimore Orioles - Austin Martin, OF, Vanderbilt
Sleeper Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State

Flipping these two, for now, the O’s seem to be content to take the best player. They played the same game a year ago and went with the more expensive but higher-rated talent.

3 Miami Marlins - Asa Lacy, LHP, TAMU
Sleeper Austin Martin, OF, Vanderbilt

If Martin is there, he is the pick, if he is not, then it is Lacy. This is the second easiest pick in terms of what is known and what is likely.

4 Kansas City - Zac Veen, OF, Spruce Creek HS (FL), Committed Florida
Sleeper Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State

Veen seems to have settled in as their guy. I still think Moore might be tempted by Gonzales, who has the intangibles and character for days. Much like Witt a year ago, Veen has tools for days and could be a potential five-tool player.

5 Toronto Blue Jays - Max Meyer, RHP, Minnesota
Sleeper - Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State

Still a bit crazy that I am not going with bloodlines, but Meyer has the best present stuff in this class. Front office there has no fear when it comes to height, and if Meyer was 6’5”, he would be going no worse than two in this draft.

6 Seattle Mariners - Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State
Sleeper  Emerson Hancock, RHP, Georgia

Mariners have gone with college pitchers the last two years in round one, both from small schools. I don’t think they will fear that Gonzales comes from New Mexico. Both Logan Gilbert and George Kirby excelled at missing bats, which Hancock did not do in college until this season.

7 Pittsburgh Pirates - Heston Kjerstad, OF, Arkansas
Sleeper Mick Abel, RHP, Jesuit HS (OR), Committed Oregon State

The connection between the Pirates and college bats has been there throughout the process. There has been more prep talk of late, but is that just smoke? Kjerstad is the last of the current tier of college bats.

8 San Diego Padres - Robert Hassell, OF, Independence HS (TN), Committed Vanderbilt
Sleeper Tyler Soderstrom, C/OF, Turlock HS (CA) Committed to UCLA

They have been tied to Veen or Hassell throughout the process. Some prefer Hassell. If both were off the board, I think Soderstrom is the next bat that they would consider here.

9 Colorado Rockies - Emerson Hancock, RHP, Georgia
Sleeper Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State

Hancock was a potential first overall pick, and being there at nine and throwing a sinker makes this a logically pick for the Rockies. The Rockies have been tied to several pitchers in the Comp A round and could go for one of the college catchers here.

10 Los Angeles Angels -  Ed Howard, SS, Mount Carmel HS (IL) Committed Oklahoma State `
Sleeper Drew Bowser, 3B, Harvard-Westlake HS (CA) Committed Stanford

I started to go with Detmers here, but when you look at the data the last four years, the Angels have taken one pitcher in the top two rounds and none in the first. Howard fits what we have seen them do, and give them another dynamic up the middle talent. The other rumor is the Angels taking Bowser knowing he intends to go to Stanford in order to punt the pick this year and get a compensation pick in 2021.

11 Chicago White Sox - Reid Detmers, LHP, Louisville
Sleeper Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State

If Detmers is there, he is the pick. If they go with a college bat, I think Dingler fits the profile better than Bailey. If Crochet is the pick that shows me, Williams made the final call on the pick.

12 Cincinnati Reds - Cade Cavalli, RHP, Oklahoma
Sleeper Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF, Harvard-Westlake HS (CA) Committed Vanderbilt

After all the prep arm talk, we swing back to a college arm. Cavalli is in play with the last three teams. If they do go with a prep outfielder, then I think PCA fits what the Reds look for more than Hendrick.

13 San Francisco Giants - Aaron Sabato, 1B, UNC
Sleeper Tyler Soderstrom, C/OF, Turlock HS (CA) Committed to UCLA

They have drafted and signed on prep pitcher the last two years. What they have done is taken safer players with big college production regardless of position. Sabato under slot here with a prep talent in round two makes a lot of sense. Soderstrom is the name most often tied to the Giants right now.

14 Texas Rangers - Patrick Baily, C, NC State
Sleeper Justin Foscue, 2B, Mississippi State

The Rangers went very conservative a year ago and are rumored to do the same this year. Bailey is the top bat college bat to most people. Foscue does have a lot of fans and could be in play as well.

15 Philadelphia Phillies -  Justin Foscue, 2B, Mississippi State
Sleeper Garrett Mitchell, OF, UCLA

Phillies are about as conservative as a team gets. After some earlier rumors about them and prep talent, mos have them on college hitters. Foscue is the safer of the two due to his college production, which the Phillies have targeted.

16 Chicago Cubs -  Garrett Mitchell, OF, UCLA
Sleeper Tyler Soderstrom, C/OF, Turlock HS (CA) Committed to UCLA

This seems to be Mitchell’s floor. He was drafted out of high school by the A’s, where the new scouting director came from. They could go prep, and among the hitters, Soderstrom stands out.

17 Boston Red Sox - Mick Abel, RHP, Jesuit HS (OR), Committed Oregon State
Sleeper Austin Hendrick, OF, West Allegheny HS (PA), committed Mississippi State

Most places have them on a prep arm, and it makes sense. Chaim Bloom comes from the Rays who had no issue taking sliding prep arms. There is a chance the top prep arm will still be on the board here. They have to pick between a prep arm or bat at this point.

18 Arizona Diamondbacks - Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF, Harvard-Westlake HS (CA) Committed Vanderbilt
Sleeper - Nick Bitsko, RHP, Central Bucks East HS (PA), Committed Virginia

Pete Crow-Armstrong fits the Diamondbacks model exceptionally well. In addition, there have been a lot of people jumping back on this bandwagon late. I would not be shocked if he ended up a lot higher.

19 New York Mets - Garrett Crochet, RHP, Tennessee
Sleeper Austin Hendrick, OF, West Allegheny HS (PA), committed Mississippi State

Crochet has put off a lot of teams late, and there were already injury concerns. The Mets are all about ceiling, and Crochet’s is as good as anyone. Soderstrom and Hendrick were also very tempting at this point.

20 Milwaukee Brewers - Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State
Sleeper Bryce Jarvis, RHP, Duke

Dingler fits the Brewers models as an athletic up the middle talent with excellent production and limited strikeouts. The high producing arm that could make sense here is Jarvis.

21 St. Louis Cardinals - Tyler Soderstrom, C/OF, Turlock HS (CA) Committed to UCLA
Sleeper Austin Hendrick, OF, West Allegheny HS (PA), committed Mississippi State

The Cardinals have a choice of two sliding bats and go for the one with bloodlines and a chance at more positional value. The cardinals have done very well just taking whatever player slides to them the last two years.

22 Washington Nationals - Cole Wilcox, RHP, Georgia
Sleeper JT Ginn, RHP, Mississippi State

This one has been relatively consistent and only doesn’t happen if Wilcox is off the board, which is possible as high as Texas. Ginn, another famous name, but I would not be shocked by any of the prep talents who are sliding here.

23 Cleveland Indians - Nick Bitsko, RHP, Central Bucks East HS (PA), Committed Virginia
Sleeper Tanner Witt, RHP/3B, Episcopal HS (TX) Committed Texas

Bitsko mix of velocity, spin rate, and age would make him very hard for the Indians to pass on. If he was gone, Witt is the other prep arm that makes sense for this selection. If they went with Cape performance, I still think Mlodzinski works as well.

24 Tampa Bay Rays - Carson Tucker, SS, Mountain Pointe HS  (AZ) Committed Texas
Sleeper Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio HS (TX) Committed to Texas

The thought is the Rays like Tucker and can save a lot of money for their next two selections by taking one of the biggest risers over the past few weeks. Rays typically go with pitchers with highly grade stuff or with up the middle athletes.

25 Atlanta Braves -  Bryce Jarvis, RHP, Duke Slade Cecconi, RHP, Miami
Sleeper Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio HS (TX) Committed to Texas

Braves have been connected to prep talent late, but based on last year, it seems a college arm is likely. The college arm that stands out in terms of performance in college is Jarvis. Kelly would make sense if they went prep.

26 Oakland Athletics - Nick Loftin, SS, Baylor
Sleeper Austin Wells, C/1B, Arizona

Look for the up the middle bat to the Athletics. They have been tied to college bats for a decade, and Loftin, with his high contact and low strikeout rate, stands out in a lot of models teams use. Wells also makes sense as we get closer to the robot umpires, he would have a great chance to catch where his ability as a hitter would greatly play up.

27 Minnesota Twins - Austin Wells, C/1B, Arizona
Sleeper Jordan Westburg, SS, Mississippi State

The Twins draft for power, and in terms of the hitters left, there are the two college players listed along with Jordan Walker. I could see any of the three here. I put Wells because he has the cleanest profile of the group.

28 New York Yankees - Bobby Miller, RHP, Lousiville
Sleeper Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech

Beeter might have better stuff than Miller, but Miller is often brought up with the Yankees. Yankees are another team that tends to be conservative. Miller is bigger and comes from the Louisville program, which is a big bonus for pitcher evaluation of late. I want to put Beeter, but I am trusting a source here.

29 Los Angeles Dodgers - Tanner Witt, RHP/3B, Episcopal HS (TX) Committed Texas
Sleeper Jordan Westburg, SS, Mississippi State

Dodgers have been all over the place. I heard Witt has a significant number, but it sounds like someone is meeting it. The Dodgers have more pool than you think, due to getting a Comp B pick in the Betts deal. If the Dodgers want to roll the bat on an upside bat, Westburg and his up the middle potential make sense.

Comp Round A

30 Baltimore Orioles - Austin Hendrick, OF, West Allegheny HS (PA), committed Mississippi State
Sleeper  Dax Fulton, LHP, Mustang HS (OK) Committed Oklahoma

Most have Fulton here, but then again, most don’t have Hendrick here. It is not just the age issue, but also concerns about contact that have caused some people to second guess where he could go.

31 Pittsburgh Pirates -  Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio HS (TX) Committed to Texas
Sleeper Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech

There has been talk the Pirates could take a prep arm in the top ten. In this case, a player who once had top ten talk falls to them. After taking Kjerstad, they should have the money to add Kelley to the mix.

32 Kansas City Royals -  Slade Cecconi, RHP, Miami
Sleeper Jordan Westburg, SS, Mississippi State

Royals take big-bodied pitchers, and Cecconi fits the mold and the value for the Royals right here. Most mocks have him going in the top 29. In terms of bats, Westburg and Casey martin of Arkansas would be the names to watch.

33 Arizona Diamondbacks - Justin Lange, RHP, Llano HS (TX), Committed Dallas Baptist
Sleeper Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech

The Diamondbacks have been tied to a lot of prep and college pitchers. Beeter if very tempting so much, so I had him here at first. I think the ceiling of Lange would be hard to pass on. He is raw, but the Diamondbacks have not been afraid to take big swings on talent.

34 San Diego Padres -  Clayton Beeter, RHP, Texas Tech
Sleeper JT Ginn, RHP, Mississippi

The Padres are clearly going for it, and Beeter one of the pitchers with the best chance to help right now. In addition, he is one of the best players left in general. Beeter is just a perfect fit on about a half a dozen levels.

35 Colorado Rockies - Carmen Mlodzinski, RHP, South Carolina
Sleeper Jordan Walker, 3B, Decatur HS (GA) committed Duke

Mlodzinski is another college arm for the Rockies who add maybe the best sinker in the draft to their minors. It is a deep pitching class, so why not mine it to get the specific type of pitchers the Rockies need to have any chance of success.

36 Cleveland Indians -  Jordan Walker, 3B, Decatur HS (GA) committed Duke
Sleeper Jared Shuster, LHP, Wake Forest

Indians love Georgia talent, and players who are young for their class. Jordan Walker is both of these things. The Indians would also place a high value on his intelligence. Shuster is another potential first-rounder who had a great Cape.

37 Tampa Bay Rays - Dax Fulton, LHP, Mustang HS (OK) Committed Oklahoma
Sleeper  Masyn Winn, SS/RHP, Kingswood HS (TX) Committed Arkansas

The Rays saved money so they can be the ones to get Fulton. Plus, there is a beautiful symmetry in using the pick they got from the cardinals in the Liberatore deal to add the top prep left-hander in this year’s draft. Rays are also a forward-thinking team that could find a way to maximize Winn’s dual talent.

And Yes, if I did the Tigers, I would be giving them JT Ginn from Mississippi State at the top of round two.
